Turning Heads-#Linkup-Styling a Corset-Like Top Over 40+ Eyelet Skirt

Hello Ladies

.I hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day. I myself, am just mom to 2 little fur babies who are a great joy to me and make me smile everyday. My mom just recently spent about 3 weeks with us and we had a great time. Lots of talking, eating and drinking.  By now, if you read the blog, you know one of my favorite past times is going to Vineyards. I enjoy tasting different wines and as the weather gets warmer sitting outside on the wicker couches and sipping Sangria. So, yes, we were at another Vineyard. I truly am snot a snob about anything except coffee, tea and wine. Ha 🙂 It has rained nearly every day this past week, with severe thunderstorms which make my girl want to hide in the closet. So, today was one of those ” I have to take advantage of it” Spring Days, at 80 degrees and sunny. I certainly have other hobbies ( music) but this is a favorite when the weather is just right. Soon it will be Charlotte POPS Symphony Season, yet another place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.

Today I am going to share a look that you may say.. Did I read “Corset-like” in the title, was that right? Well, when I went to NYFW last fall, and attended the Betsey Johnson show, I saw a look and idea that I thought may be fun to replicate. Perhaps it isn’t for everyone, but I do like to experiment from time to time. Corsets were worn over blouses with skirts and wide leg pants. I thought the look rocked, so this is a bit more “conservative” as the top isn’t a corset in terms of lingerie, but a sleeveless corset-like  top that I wear in the summer as is. So, when the idea came to me, I thought lets take a white  eyelet pencil skirt for texture a more proper white button down, and add the  pink floral with the thin ribbon detailed top, ) and pointed pink sling back flats for a fun and romantic style. Side note: caught in drizzle and wind… tough on one’s hair! I added my lilac Coach bag for additional spring color.

If you are interested in trying this look, and would not wear this style top on its own because you don’t like bare arms or want to show too much skin, this is one option.

  • White House Black Market has some beautiful corset style tops, many floral. You can often find them very reasonable on Poshmark, a discount site.
  • Wear a button down top underneath, as shown here.
  • Another option is always a blazer or cropped shrug OVER the top to let the top take “center stage” but provide more coverage.
  • Pair this style top with a different pattern ( pattern mixing) and wear some wide leg trousers to create an hourglass proportion. I would love some in white!

Would you experiment with a “corset-like top” or is this just not your style?

Jess, look at you KILLING IT with the corset over the blouse!!!! I LOVE THIS ON YOU!!!! It’s so seriously chic and fab!!

I need to visit a vineyard. I’ve always wanted to go honestly, and this just affirms that it’s a solid goal. 😉 Any wine tips?

Thank you Adriele! I have had this top for awhile, but needed to do something different. WHBM has some awesome corset tops, going to add a few more for summer. Vineyard bopping is one of my favorite pastimes, so fun just trying different wines and hanging out. Tips..hmm. Be open to trying new wines. I love Spanish wines like Granache, Tempranillo and Malbec ( reds) but also enjoy Pinot Nior and regions like South Africa, Australia, Mendoza. I am more of a red wine girl, but I do try white wines. I would say experiment and try various regions to find what you may like. 🙂

I so agree with you about vineyards–that is one of my favorite things to do and I miss it so much! While there are tons of wineries here in Italy, it’s mainly just about tasting the wine and moving on, while I prefer the American style of hanging out all day with friends and snacks 🙂 You look so colorful and springy–I love it!

Thank you Meagan, yes it is a favorite pastime. I love to try new wines and regions, but so right, love just enjoying the views, hanging out with the pups, bringing lunch and talking. Glad you like the look. xx

Jess, this corset is a new one for me, and I don’t know if I’ll be brave enough to try it. Although your idea to wear it over the top of your blouse makes it more palatable. You carry this off beautifully, I hasten to add, and the white separates look so summery and light with the flowery corset. Most of all, I love those shoes today. They are so cute, but also elegant if that makes sense x

I have a corset like top (which has shoulder straps), but I’ve never tried this. I really think how you styled it works because your shirt & skirt are almost the same and thus are a great backdrop for the corset top. I’ll have to go experiment, now!

Loving the creativity of pulling this outfit together … the corset-like top really makes the whole outfit. I’m a bit busty so when need to play with this look so as not to further accentuate – but it would be fun to experiment. Thanks for the inspiration and hosting.

Jess, this look is fabulous on you! I actually have not been on board with the corset or corset-like tops alone or over another shirt until this post. You have done it in such a soft, classy, feminine way. Perfect. I fear I may be too big busted to try this look (except alone for my husband! ha.) And your shoes are to die for!

Jess this look is SO clever – I think it looks amazing!!!!!! I’m always up for a bit of quirky – but by doing quirky with florals and the eyelet fabric in pinks and whites it results in a really edgy but feminine look. Now must go in search of a corset…!!
