Mixing Patterns for Spring with a Scarf

This is the first year in about 3 years, that Spring hasn’t immediately turned to Summer, here in Charlotte, NC. Typically, we may get two weeks of cooler weather and rain, and then Boom! It’s 85 degrees in April. Well, Spring has been here, albeit more rain that I want, but cooler temps and flowers abound. I am wearing a thrifted Ann Taylor sheath dress styled with a bright floral scarf and white jacket, mixing prints in the process.

My Outfit

There is a lot of availability to mix prints in the colder months, with layering and stockings in our Fall and Winter wardrobes. The more heat, the fewer clothes, making the opportunity to pattern mix not as plentiful. One technique, however, is using accessories to create pattern mixing opportunities and more interest to the eye with your outfits.

Here I am showing you my magenta floral scarf, bought at Charming Charlies, mixed with the plums and purples in this patterned sheath dress from Ann Taylor. I bought this dress ages ago, and it still stands the test of time. Rushing on the side keeps it a current style and I love the ability to add a kimono, jacket, or moto to this sharp fitted dress. The jacket and the dress are both from Poshmark, thrifted ( See: How to Shop at Poshmark) and the white pointed leather heels are Zara from several seasons ago. I love this fresh, bright look with added whites. You could change the look with a denim jacket, or long kimono as well.

Mixing Prints

Other ways to add prints to a look in the Spring-

  1. Add a clutch or purse with a pattern to mix with your outfit. Shoes with a pattern like leopard or floral can also add to a pattern mixed look.
  2. Scarves are always popular any time of year. If you don’t fancy a longer scarf, neck scarves are popular at mixing prints.
  3. Floral tops with striped pants are one way to mix prints in the Spring and vice versa. You will find more floral tops or blouses than pants, but it makes for an interesting mix.
  4. Along those lines, a striped cotton midi dress, with a floral bag is a fun way to usher in Spring while mixing prints.

Are you one to try print mixing in the Spring? What are some of your favorite prints?

Thank you Amy! I did like how this turned out, and the scarf added enough interest with a different pattern. Happy Monday! xx

It is truly spring outfit, Jess, love the dress and the white jacket over it. Great tips for mixing prints as it could be tricky sometimes

Fantastic ideas for pattern mixing Jess! We get hot so fast here, I rarely wear a scarf in the spring, but your post inspired me!

Thank you Andy! I know what you mean, we often don’t have this long of a spring and it gets hot. I do love a neck scarf too, which isn’t quite a much fabric. Glad I could! Happy Monday! xx

This is absolutely lovely on you Jess!! I love how the dress and scarf have the same colors in them, and go together so perfectly!!
We are having rain today but I guess we need that for the flowers to grow!!

Thank you Jodie! I wanted to give pattern mixing a try in the Spring as I do more in the Winter, as there are more layering opportunites. A scarf is a great way to add patterns. Yes, but we have had excess rain. xx

I’ve always been a bit scared of mixing prints but I think I might start small with some neutral colours and prints like stripes and polka dots or something. You did it beautifully, I love the combination of colours and the whole outfit looks very put together, the two prints don’t seem out of place or like they’re clashing.

      Hi Marta
That sounds good! I would give it a try! Glad you like the look! It really is fun and adds so much to a look! I thought I would give it a go for Spring, as summer there are no layers! xx

When I saw the first picture my instant reaction was wow! That is such a pretty color on you and the crispness of the white jacket just adds to the outfit! Yes, spring has been strange here in Atlanta too: warm, cold, warm, rainy… 40 this morning, 75 this afternoon! Layers are my friend!

      Hi Mirielle
I just saw the two in my closet and thought they paired well together. The jacket is one of my favorites for Spring, I bought it secondhand. Yes, it is finally getting a bit warmer here but I enjoy having a Spring and not immediate heat. Happy Monday! xx

Love the style and cut of that jacket Jess! That scarf is so pretty too and the colors of it and the dress are perfect together! I know what you mean about Spring lasting a week or two – that happens to us all the time. This weekend we had a reprieve and it was so nice but it’s been 90 degrees already! Any kind of layering is near impossible!
    Happy Monday my friend!

Wow, I can’t imagine 90 degrees so soon! We do have it go into September once it hits thought. The jacket and dress are from Poshmark years ago. The jacket is white house black market. Happy Monday! xx
