Target Plaid Flannel Dress with Combat Boots

Morning friends!

I hope you enjoyed a great weekend. Ours was low key, and we enjoyed the Harvest Festival in our town. Today I am bringing you another look from Target’s Universal Threads line.

Target Plaid and The Grunge Era

There is a fair amount going on in October, and if you missed my Friday’s post, read about October Favorites Here. I was browsing the Target website, looking for seasonal candles, when I came across this olive/black flannel dress. I love the colors and the style of this cozy dress. The dress is a wrap style and is longer in the back that front, but still a nice length. The flannel is soft, and my husband made it known how much he liked this dress on me. He was excited, as we could both wear flannels and I wouldn’t have to steal any of these flannel shirts to get cozy. Plus, this is more my style.

Combat boots are showing this season, and I have had these Sofft boots for many years. They are one of my favorite pairs! The brand is known for its comfort. I just saw plaid and thought combat boots!

If it were colder out, I might pair this with a moto jacket. I have a collection in other colors besides black. In addition, I would have added some fun fishnet stockings to complete the look. Fashion should always be a fun expression of one’s self and show the mood you might be experiencing that day. I am a firm believer that you should wear what you want!

This outfit has a “Grunge-vibe” to it, which got me thinking about all of the 90’s Grunge music I used to teach on guitar when I worked at a studio in Pittsburgh. It was the era of Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, and Nirvana. How many times did I teach, “Smells Like Teen Spirit?”

“Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is a rock music genre and subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s in the U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle’s independent record label Sub Pop and the region’s underground music scene”. ** wikipedia.

Grunge melded together punk and metal with electric guitar distortion and dark themes.

One of my favorite tunes, written by David Bowie, “The Man Who Saved the World” was also made popular by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. I’ll share it on Youtube at the end of this post.

Dark plaids just remind me of a time where waffle knit tops were layered under open flannels and worn by girls and guys.

I even went with another dark shade on my nails, with Opi’s Black Onyx. I love dark greens, blacks, greys and dark reds for Fall.

I have had these  black fillagree earrings for years. Vintage from Etsy.

Black Onyx nail polish by OPI!

Do you love plaid or flannel?  Did you listen to any grunge music in the 90s?

Love the earrings! I have been thinking of cutting out some lace and starching it to make some earrings like this. Now I must!

Jess, you know I would wear this entire outfit in a heartbeat! Now I need to find what plaid dresses are in my closet to pair with my combat boots! I remember in high school, I had this black-watch plaid shirt dress. It was flannel and the short baby doll style. I always wore it with ripped tights and my Doc Martens. It was one of my favorite outfits! I kind if wish I still had the boots and the dress (although I doubt the dress would fit me these days, but the boots would!) I think I loaned the boots to a friend and never got them back. Oh well. I have enough shoes to sustain me for life.

      Hi Shelbee
I could see you wearing this for sure! The outfit you mentioned sounds right up your alley. I have never had Doc Martins but know ladies who have and how comfy they are, not to mention edgy and cool! Glad you like it! Ill be styling it again as it gets colder.

That soft fabric and the combat boots are a perfect comfy combo. I wear a pair of Doc Martens all the time and don’t think I ever realized how grunge music might have influenced me to make this footwear choice. Jess, your article really took me back in time. Smells Like Teen Spirit used to be my sound track! ✨✨✨💖

      Hi Suzana
That was/is a good song huh? I loved some of the music during that era and Nirvana grew on me as I had so many students who wanted to learn them on guitar. Yes, with the Docs!

Hi Ruth! Thank you. I do wear them often and love them with long dresses too. I need some thick comfy socks to wear with them.

Another winner Jess! I love plaid and I adore the way you styled it with the boots. Even though I’m 68 I love grunge music and listen to a ton of it! And I love flannel too!

Hi Maureen, thank you! It is soft! I remember kids wearing plaid flannel shirts over tees in school, my boyfriend used to love to wear them in music school. The boots are my favorites. Enjoy your week!

Hi Kellyann, these were one of my first pairs of boots from my boot collection. I love the Swedish brand Sofft as they are! Oh, I can see them being popular in the Uk 🙂 The flanel is soft! Happy Monday!
