Turning Heads Linkup-Creating an Interesting Look Through Texture

Hello Friends,

How was your weekend?  I was busy cleaning house, going to watch the Steeler Game at the local watering hole, cheering on my home team. We hung some of my dad’s photographs that I received at Christmas. My mom put them on canvas, as a memory and now they adorn the bedroom and hallway. Yesterday was tough, as it was just last year…this time.

Anyway,as far as the day-to-day, I continue to shop my closet, as I missed this beautiful embroidered dress from Zara that went on sale. I am not quick enough! I have a few things on my “wishlist” that being one, a pair of white leather sneakers, ( Adidias or Puma) and a floral handbag for spring ( Ted Baker). Otherwise, I am pretty content with the closet I have at the moment. Closet, yes. Grey hairs, no.

One of my favorite things about dressing for Fall/Winter is layering and creating outfits that can mix prints, textures, patterns. I think one can be a bit more creative than the pretty floral dress and delicate handbag with heels. Today I thought I would talk about one of the ways I like to make my winter outfits more interesting, and that is by mixing several textures.

This look today takes an intricate lace pattern, cashmere leoapard print, and a sable-colored rich velvet blazer to make one cohesive look and neutral palette. The leopard pattern is repeated in my Rockport kitten heels. I have a fondness for color, but enjoy wearing neutrals when I can mix textures as not to make the look “dull”. If you are trying this type of look try these tips:

  • Decide whether you want a neutral or color palette.
  • What are your favorite textures: Do you enjoy wearing silk, lace, cashmere, wool? Are you a fan of tweed?
  • Take several pieces from your closet in 2-3 different textures and try combining them to create a look.
  • If you wear dresses- add a different textured blazer or sweater over top.
  • One can also add textures with stockings or tights in the winter.
  • Accessories can add additional texture to a look. For instance, I have a jacquard purse I will wear in combination with other textured clothing items.
  • Experiment!

Let me know in the comments if a.) you are a Steelers fan b) Enjoy combining textures with your Winter Wardrobe

Jess, one of the things you do so well is mixing your fabrics. I must admit I do covet your collection of velvet jackets – it seems to be endless! I love the richness of velvet to add that certain something to any outfit, and lace has the same effect. Lots of great tips here.

    Have a good week x

As for football, I’m not really much of a football fan, but I live in New England, so…’nough said.

So sorry about your loss. Anniversaries of a loss are very difficult. I’ve experienced quite a few losses over the past few years (including my dad) and the grief never really goes away, it just changes over time. My heart is with you, my friend.
