What I’m Reading, Planning, and Wearing/Buying

Since it is now into August, I thought it was time for an episode of What I am reading, planning, wearing/buying.

Reading:

Any historical fiction fans out there?

I have finished two books recently – The Women, by Kristin Hannah and Cilka’s Journey, by Heather Morris.

I have enjoyed both of these books immensely, and highly recommend. Being a fan of historical fiction- Kristin Hannah’s book is about the women nurses of the Vietnam war and one woman’s experience and story.

Cilka’s Journey is one I read, as it is the same author as “The Tattooist” of Auschwitz. The story of Lale in the Tatooist really captured me and I wanted to read Cilka Journey, as the tattooist, Lale, knew of Cilka in the camps, and I was interested in reading her tale of survival.

Looking to a new book, I just ordered, “The Things We Can Not Say” by Kelly Rimmer.

The New York Times bestseller—for fans of All the Light We Cannot See and The Tattooist of Auschwitz!

“From the bestselling author of Truths I Never Told You, Before I Let You Go, and the The Warsaw Orphan, Kelly Rimmer’s powerful WWII novel follows a woman’s urgent search for answers to a family mystery that uncovers truths about herself that she never expected.” Amazon

Planning-Travel

We are planning a trip to Madrid and Portugal for October. I can’t wait. I’ve got the travel bug, and we are planning a big trip each year. I say, “Better late than never!” I will have travel blog posts the nearer we get to the trip. One carry-on and a bag for the plane will be it for a 2 week trip. I recommend the books by Rick Steves if you are planning the trip yourself, as he gives helpful tips on lodging, restaurants, places to see and “insider tips” as well.  The Spain book is comprehensive as well.

I have planned a paella cooking class in Madrid, where you make your own paella and have it for dinner with chicken or fish, as part of a 4 course meal with Spanish wines.  We will be going on  bus tour of Sintra and other towns in Madrid as well a Duoro Valley boat ride visiting two vineyards, and Port wine excursion in Porto, Portugal. We plan the trip ourselves, and it is a bit of an undertaking, but this way we get to do certain things at our leisure, and I find going on group tours somewhat tough with my condition. Rick Steves allows you to download self-guided tours you can listen to and go at your own leisure and pace.

Wearing/Buying

Amazon

I will have a post on my most recent purchases but will share a few right now. I have a few Amazon purchases that I have made:

These eye pads are used to create an eyeshadow look, especially for hooded eyes. You get 200.

My favorite makeup primer. It is great for blurring and smoothing- perfect for using right before foundation. I spend more of the foundation, as I save on the primer, and it works just as well as a more expensive brand I used to use.

Colorwow makes great products and this root touch up saves me between salon visits. It is waterproof and I love it

This Morrocan Oil Dry shampoo certainly helps as I am not shampooing as much, and keeping my color. It doesn’t smell as harsh as some of the other dry shampoos.

Here are just a few Fall finds that I will style in an upcoming post –

Poshmark and Mango Sale

Poshmark Vintage Nordstrom velvet burgundy blazer.

New Quince cashmere sweater. Poshmark deal for $35. I saved $15.

A new top on sale at Mango. Loved the colors.

H&M- got this deep red sweater on sale, there are only a few sizes left. It does come in 3 other colorways.

Great to wear with high -rise pants or jeans as it is slightly cropped ( on me) if you are long-waisted.

Tell me, what are you reading, planning or wearin/buying? Would love to hear from you in the comments.

Have a great weekend!

Jess xx

I am hoping to plan a trip to Spain for 2026 (next year will be NY), so I will be so interested to see where you will go. We probably will stay further north in the Catalunya area so we can go to the South of France too. I love the idea of a cooking class! My friend in the Republic of Georgia did one with us and it was fun!

I am reading two different books at the moment. One is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. The other is Under the Bridge. We have already watched the limited series, but I wanted to read the book, too. I haven’t been doing too much shopping, though! I’m leaving this coming Thursday for Ireland/Scotland! Yikes! I’m going with a friend so we decided to book a tour rather than try to wing it on our own. I’m familiar enough with the lower part of the United Kingdom, but Scotland and Ireland are beyond me!

It has been so long since I read TRuman Capote and that book. I could re-read it for sure. I saw the series you are speaking about, and bet the book has more interesting detail. OH how exciting to go to Ireland and Scotland. The UK will be our trip next year, so I look forward to hearing about yours. Very exciting!
