Halter tops- Can you wear them with broad shoulders?
Halter Tops- Should I wear them?
Well, let’s get the obvious out of the way! Should or should not. Hmmm. I talked about that being a fashion pet peeve of mine- with articles stating what women over a certain age, “should” or “should not ” wear. If you love it, wear it with confidence.
What do you ladies think about halter tops? Do you avoid them? Or do you love this style that often has a pretty neckline or ties in the front? If you wear a halter, do you wear something over it like a kimono or blazer to cover the arms?
I love this one I am wearing with details that stand out like the scalloped hem, and the tie at the side of the neck. The pink gingham is romantic as well.
This one from White House Black Market has a similar shape and the ruffle detail draws your eye to the neck area as well
So, you might wonder, if you are broad shouldered, if you should wear halter tops? Well, I am more broad shouldered than my sister, and I enjoy a pretty halter top like this pink gingham style. Tomorrow, you will see another one styled on the blog. The key here is to either find a halter with thicker straps or ones where the halter begins in the middle by the neckline. The focus here, and the example below, draws the eye inward as opposed to focusing only on the shoulders.
Another way this halter works on ladies with broader shoulders is that the bodice portion of the halter is looser, thus balancing out the shoulders even more
If you like the halter style, but would prefer a dress, an a-line or fit and flare dress would work well here.
I styled this halter style with my light denim straight jeans from Loft that i bought eons ago. You could certainly pair this with a tailored trouser or something more structured on the bottom- a pair of bermuda shorts. Because this halter top is flowy and not fitted, you would want something a bit more fitted on the bottom.
Some Halter Examples
THIS halter dress is just perfect for transitioning into Fall, with the oranges and greens. Add a pair of booties and a moto or light cardigan, and voila!
Here are some other examples of me wearing a halter top style.

I’d love to hear if you are one that wears halter tops and how you style yours. Let me know in the comments!

Posted at 02:38h, 27 JulyVery timely as I’ve only just realised (!) that halter necks are good on me, even though I have broad shoulders. The only snag is underwear because strapless bras are usually moulded and make the bust look even bigger !

Posted at 13:52h, 27 JulyOh I know. I am not a fan of strapless bras. Mostly I get bandeaux type strapless bras, but sometimes they aren’t as supportive as you need. I have bought a couple of the strapless and they pad them and make them so much bigger .

Posted at 10:51h, 26 JulyThis is such a pretty top, Jess! I love it with your light washed denim and that adorable wicker bag. I tend to steer away from halter tops myself because I just never felt comfortable in them. I do have broad shoulders but I struggle more with the bra issue with halter tops. I do have a few halter styles but I rarely reach for them. Although I did just turn a scarf into a halter top and that was fun!

Posted at 13:56h, 27 JulyI know what you mean about the bra issue. I wear a bandeaux bra under the halters, but they might not be supportive enough for everyone. These jeans are ages old, but I wont part with them!

Posted at 07:01h, 26 JulyYes, you SHOULD wear them ! I know what you mean about the word “should” – ha! But all kidding aside, you have great shoulders so go for it. I especially like the pink gingham print, a fave of mine.
Looking good Jess!

Posted at 04:56h, 26 JulyYou enjoy wearing this style, exactly what it’s all about! You’re extremely slim Jess and look fabulous but on some women a halter could emphasize the hips, you have to trust your eye.

Posted at 19:23h, 25 JulyYou made some great points Jess. The question I always wonder is why would broad shoulders (or any shape of shoulders) be bad?? Besides that top is just too cute NOT to wear.
XOXO

Posted at 13:59h, 27 JulyIt isn’t bad, it is just what someone’s comfort level is. Glad you like the gingham!

Posted at 09:05h, 25 JulyAgreed! It’s all about confidence and not fashion rules. I love halter tops and the one you featured is no exception. I love how a halter top shows enough skin without being over the top and of course, I can’t deny the beauty it creates with showcasing shoulders – broad or not. I hope you had a great weekend and happy Monday!
