Layers and a Menswear Look for January 2024

Maybe you have been wearing enough frilly dresses for awhile. Your mood might just call for a bit of menswear inspired fashion!

How is everyone? I hope you had a nice weekend and weren’t snowed in! We have had a lot of rain lately, and our nature trail looks like a pond. Otherwise, our weekend was enjoyable, with me attending orientation at Lake Norman Humane, as I was quite excited to get started. They are a no-kill shelter and rescue pets due to be euthanized. I will have to go in for training soon, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while.

Layers and a Menswear Look

I like to call this menswear with an “edge” as I love wearing a blazer and vest (waistcoat) and the added layer of a button down. The edge comes from these coated black jeans that look like I am wearing leather. This menswear-inspired look just looks so fun and fashionable to me! Will I wear this every day? Probably not. But when I go out, I always dress up and this was fun to put together. All you need now is a newsboy cap.

I have been thinking and rethinking my wardrobe over the years, and I have donated things that don’t quite fit my style these days. I have always liked the look of vests as they show your shape and look smart.

Today, in fashion, there is less of a line drawn with menswear and womenswear, and androgynous looks are showing in society for more freedom. I could certainly mix this up if I really wanted more of a dicotomy. Tulle skirt and combat boots? Brogues and sequined skirt? You can wear what you want, but you want to make sure it is a style that feels right for YOU.

This look feels good to me, and I like the Scottish tartan, as it gives a nod to potential anscestors of mine. ( I have never completely spent enough time on Ancestry.com) but some in our family think we are part Scottish, others Irish.

Keeping the leg line clean, by wearing all black, elongates the leg with the croc black boots. The velvet earrings go with the jacket and give a bit of punch with the burgundy velvet earrings.

If I were to show you this with my black khakis, you or dress pants, you could say I have a bit of “prep in my step”.

According to The List,

“Designers like Balmain and Rolf Ekroth experimented with layering dark transparent garments over bright colors for an unexpected, artful look, while designers like FFORME and Prada created designs that would look incomplete on their own paired perfectly with base layers.”

So if you are craving this kind of a menswear look, stay tuned as there will be more in 2024!

Here is one of my past menswear inspired looks.

I do enjoy your take on menswear. I think adding a few feminine touches makes it look more stylish.

I love this look! It’s definitely academic chic! The vest gives a nice contrast with the blazer.
