Turning Heads Linkup- How to Wear Tweed Casually

Tweed blazer, jeans and leopard boots

Do you think of tweed as a dressy fabric, to be paired with a tweed skirt in a Chanel-esque way? I am sharing how to style tweed in a casual modern way with denim and share some of the ways to wear tweed.

Where Did Tweed Come From?

When you think of tweed, do you think of Sherlock Holmes? Queen Elizabeth’s suits? Perhaps your grandmother or a stately English gentleman out hunting with his dogs?

“The material originated in Scotland and Ireland, worn commonly by farmers. Tweed became popular with the upper classes across the British Isles after 1848, when Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland and designed the unique Balmoral tweed. Each highland estate began to make their own “estate tweeds” to differentiate themselves during hunting expeditions and other outdoor activities.” masterclass.com

Tweed is moisture-resistant and meant to withstand harsh climates, which you can understand originating in Scotland, Ireland and England.

It is made from dyed wool from any type of sheep, it has the characteristic of being a “hearty” material.

This tweed LaFayette 148 NY  jacket is one of my favorites, because of course, the warm Fall colors. I decided to continue with my pattern mixing ways and add my leopard booties! ( remember, a leopard pattern is considered a neutral!) Rather than wearing a button down shirt, I styled this tweed jacket with a camisole.

The leather belt by Madewell also amplifies the look but still keeps the casual vibe.

Try styling a tweed jacket with a soft tee, a pair of wide leg or cropped flared jeans, with boots and that would give you a casual, yet current/modern look. I have always thought tweed looked quite smart! 🙂

I’m a huge fan of tweed jackets with jeans—that way, it doesn’t look stodgy or old-ladylike. And once again, your mixture of texture and pattern is so on point in this look!

Jess, I adore a pretty tweed and my current tastes run to keeping it more casual like you have with this fabulous look. Pairing your jacket with animal patterns was a smart choice indeed.

I love the way you’ve styled your tweed jacket, Jess. And yes, I DO agree that leopard is a neutral–and looks great with your jacket. Cute all around. Love the history, too.

Interesting about the history tweed. I always considered it as an English upper crust fabric, when in fact it was pilfered from the working class. Beautiful outfit, Jess! Your purse is even contributing to the pattern mix.
